How To Create A Chic Christmas Tablescape On A Budget

1. Start with a Theme You’ll Reuse

Choose something timeless enough to work year after year, or flexible enough that you can remix parts of it long after Christmas is over. A good base should earn its keep.

2. Pick What You Love, Not What’s Trending

If it doesn’t feel like you, it won’t feel right on the table. Ignore what you’ve seen online and go with colours, textures, and styles you genuinely enjoy, you’ll use them more and enjoy them longer.

3. Shop Your Cupboards First

Before buying anything new, pull everything out and play around. You’ll be surprised how good things look when you mix them differently. Old plates, everyday cutlery, glasses you forgot you had. Sometimes the best table is already in your kitchen.

4. Shop Antiques (and Take Your Time)

This is where the magic happens. Antique shops and markets are full of one off pieces you won’t see on anyone else’s table, often at great prices. Mismatched glassware, old serving plates, slightly imperfect finds but they all add real character.

5. Foliage, Foliage, Foliage

Foliage is the easiest way to bring Christmas to your table. For budget you’re going to want to forage if you can. If not head to a local Christmas tree farm and pick up the cheapest tree you can find. Ours was £12, we asked them to saw off all the branches which gave us enough for a wreath and a table centrepiece. Faux works too if you already have it, but nothing beats the smell of real fir at Christmas. We also clipped holly from the garden for an extra layer of texture.

6. The Detail That’s Pulls It together

Add one thoughtful detail that pulls the table together. Create simple menus on Canva (free version) and print them, or grab some card and make handwritten place cards. These personal touches make the table feel special without spending a fortune.
